Many of us spend a signiciant part of our week working and want to find meaning and fulfilment in what we do. Often however work can easily begin to feel overwhelming and like a source of great stress. Work relationships feel strained and the workload unmanageable. We start to wonder if it is the job or us that is the problem.

 

Career counselling can help you to unpick how to make a job work for you, if you are in the right job, and if not what the right job might look like. It is a space to reflect on if your current values and needs are being met and take action to change your circumstancs if they are not.

Career counselling is a bit closer to coaching that therapy as often we are looking forward towards the career you want rather than backwards at your past. It can also be a place to explore developing better communication skills and ways of managing complex relationships in the workplace.

Symptoms of Anxiety

If you have never experienced anxiety before, it can be difficult to recognise if that is what you are experiencing. 

How anxiety presents will be unique and different for each person but some common symptoms of anxiety are listed below. 

  • Panic attacks

  • Feeling weird and detached from surroundings

  • Pounding heart

  • Unexplained fear

  • Fear of another panic attack or of anxiety

  • Repetitive thoughts

  • Not wanting to go out

  • Tiredness

  • Inability to relax

Anxiety and stress over change is a normal reaction to change and uncertainty. Entering counselling with a therapist can provide a space to reflect and find ways of coping with those normal reactions so they no longer seem as overwhelming and paralyzing

 

In my work as a counsellor I have a special interest in working with three types of life transitions; students experiencing anxiety at University, professionals struggling with stress and uncertainty in their career, and individuals experiencing anxiety early in pregnancy and needing support. I practice as a therapist both in Edinburgh and online.

Therapy is a process and the decision to begin seeing a private counsellor is not made lightly.
